Is there such a thing as society?
There are individuals. They are objects, separate objects. An object is something that can be taken out of its context and not lose its integrity. Is that a good definition of an object? Jelly comes to mind, but jelly can keep its integrity when you take it in your hands out of a bowl, as long as its small enough to fit into your cupped hands.
But water is not an object. There are drops of water. So there’s no such thing as water, only individual drops. But funnily enough, if there are enough drops, there’s a puddle, and you can slip on it and fall to your death. So there’s no “water”, but there are effects caused by a large number of water drops concentraing around the same point in space.
Maybe the analogy is not correct. The phrase is taken out of context. Marge meant that there’s no separate entity with infinite resources that you can delegate responsibility for your life to. So it’s a matter of language. What do I mean when I say that society must provide me with a safety net?
